The Ministry of Maritime Affairs has granted approval for Pakistan’s first-ever ferry service license. The international company Sea Keepers will operate ferry routes connecting Pakistan with Iran and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
High-Level Approval Meeting
The decision was finalized during a recent meeting of the high-level Licensing Committee, attended by officials from the Ministries of Maritime Affairs, Defense, Foreign Affairs, and Interior, along with representatives from the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation and Port & Shipping authorities.
A Historic Milestone for Pakistan
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, called the approval a historic move. He stated that the initiative supports Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision and aligns with Pakistan’s National Maritime Policy. The service will enhance regional connectivity, promote religious tourism, and boost maritime economic activity.
Benefits for Pilgrims and Travelers
The ferry service will be especially useful for pilgrims traveling to Iran and Iraq, as well as for Pakistani workers and tourists heading to GCC countries.
Cost-Effective Alternative to Air Travel
Minister Chaudhry emphasized that ferry routes will reduce dependency on land routes and provide a more affordable travel option compared to air travel, especially for the Pakistani diaspora and religious visitors.
Initial Operations from Karachi and Gwadar
Initially, the service will operate from Karachi and Gwadar ports. Sea Keepers will introduce modern ferries equipped with essential amenities for safe and comfortable journeys. Based on demand and agreements with neighboring countries, the government plans to expand ferry routes and port destinations.
Boosting Pakistan’s Blue Economy
The service is part of Pakistan’s plan to grow its blue economy by strengthening maritime logistics and encouraging sea tourism. Minister Chaudhry stressed that these efforts highlight Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing regional sea links and offering affordable transportation options to its citizens.
